Santa Barbara, California

Our original plan was to go to Las Vegas and then up through Death Valley but due to a pending heat wave (it was already 106F in Arizona), we decided for the cool air of the coast.

A pesky little wheel bearing problem (a bearing was spinning in the housing) surfaced and some short term solutions were administered by the side of the road.

As we passed through Big Sur (see map, left click to enlarge), wind and fog rapidly crept up from the ocean far below to the left and, to the right, hugged the mountain during a quick descent. Between the two emerging conditions was the twisting, cliff hanger of a road we were on. Within moments our speed was forced to a crawl as wind velocity accelerated to a serious storm level. For the next half hour we battled this unique condition while negotiating a series of seemingly unending twists in the road. Finally we descended into the calm of Carmel. The following pictures provide only a hint of the condition. Note: left click will substantially enlarge the five pictures following the map . It will allow you to get a very close view of the conditions that we encountered.

Notice how the fog comes down over the mountain on the right. Just around this corner things got a bit more exciting!

You know you're in San Francisco when.......

It was a natural high!

A parting shot with Mt Shasta in the background

One of many truck run-offs in any mountain region. Usually they consist of a lane of deep sand which slopes uphill for about a quarter mile. Lots of brake testing and incline info precede these runs. We tried to imagine the situation where these run-offs would be a welcome sight. Hard to imagine.
Onward into Oregon

... and we tried to take time to smell the roses

That "pesky little wheel bearing problem" back in Santa Barbara was now going to be fixed correctly by Dauntless Motors in Enumclaw, Washington. Jay is the owner and the mechanical genius behind this business. Previously a Uni-go Dealer (like us), he had great expertise regarding our trailer. His major business is in sidecars. Not something out of a package but a custom design to suit any customer's needs both off and on the road. In addition, he also creates trailers and rebuilds classic motorcycles. We were fortunate enough to be able to view his new one-wheel trailer package. We encourage you to stop by if you are in his area or virtually visit his shop . And, if it's a sidecar you want then Dauntless is all you'll need.

Our wheel being fixed. It was better than new for the rest of the trip.

This is one of the many side car projects developed by Jay and the talented folks in his shop.
